What is a Urinary Tract Infection?

A urinary tract infection, commonly referred to as a UTI, happens when bacteria get into the urinary opening and make their way into the tract. There, they can grow and multiply, causing an infection. Most cases of UTIs are mild, but in some cases, these infections can become more serious. They have the potential to make their way to the kidneys, which can cause significant health problems. That's why it's important to treat your pet's UTI quickly to reduce the chances of complications.

What Are the Symptoms of a Pet UTI?

A pet UTI can cause the frequent urge to urinate, as well as burning or pain during urination. Your pet may also have pelvic or stomach pain, feel lethargic, have a fever, and not want to eat. Since they can't tell you that something's hurting them, it's important to watch for signs that your pet's in pain. Dogs may urinate in the house or have other accidents, and cats may urinate outside the litter box if they have a UTI as well.

Is Emergency Pet Care Needed?

If your pet is very sick from a UTI, or they aren't eating, drinking, or urinating at all, emergency pet care is often needed. For a mild pet UTI, though, your veterinarian can prescribe antibiotics, and you can monitor your pet to make sure they're getting better. When in doubt, it's always best to have your pet seen as soon as possible to prevent a small issue from becoming a much bigger one.
