Mass Removals

Mass Removal in Pets

The discovery of a mass (cyst or tumor) can be a terrifying prospect for any pet parent. The good news is that the majority of masses can be successfully removed surgically, and in most cases, no further treatment is needed. Surgical removal also allows the veterinarian to send a sample to be tested at a lab to ensure the mass is benign (harmless) and not cancerous.

Signs Your Pet May Need Mass Removal Surgery

There are several types of lumps and bumps that your pet may develop for a variety of reasons, including injury or trauma, infection, sun damage, blocked pores, and age. If you notice any of the following signs, it's important to consult with your vet to obtain proper treatment.

- Lumps or bumps that were not there before

- Bleeding/discharge from a specific area

- Sores that won't heal

- Pain

- Continuous licking or biting a specific area

What Happens During Mass Removal Surgery?

On the day of surgery, your pet will receive a pre-surgical exam and then be prepped for the procedure. Anesthesia will be administered, and your pet's vitals will be monitored. The vet will make an incision around the mass and extract it. Often, extra tissue surrounding the mass is taken to ensure all the abnormal cells have been removed.

Your pet will then be sutured and taken to a recovery room, where they will be monitored for several hours. They will be sent home with a cone collar (to prevent them from tearing at the sutures), pain medication, and antibiotics. Your pet should be placed in a comfortable, quiet area to recover. It's normal for them to be lethargic and sleep most of the next 24 hours.
