Senior Pet Care

If you have a pet who has gotten older and is now in the elderly stage of life, you may need to take them to a “veterinarian near me” more often than when they were younger. The pet care that your pet gets can be important to their overall health and quality of life. Senior pet care may require more from you than when the pet was younger because of a range of health problems that can develop over time. If you need senior care or urgent care for pets, call our animal hospital to make an appointment to see our veterinarian in Alexandria, VA, for the animal care your pet needs. We at Fort Hunt Animal Hospital are here to help.

Arthritis in Pets

When you have a pet who is getting up in years, developing arthritis is a common health problem. This can be a difficult condition for your pet to live with and for you to watch them struggle with. Arthritis can cause a lot of pain in pets, and it can cause their legs and/or back to be stiff and harder to use. Arthritis in pets is often caused as the joints get to be less stable. These joints have a layer of cartilage that is between the bones of the joint so that the bones don't actually touch each other. Over time, that cartilage can be worn down, and this will cause problems with the joint. With no more cartilage located in between them, the bones will rub each other and can cause a lot of pain and stiffness for the pet. Watch out for signs of pain in your pet, and take them to see a “veterinarian near me” on our team if they appear to be in pain.

Lack of Energy

Your pet may start to have less energy over time. This is a natural progression of their health as they become senior in years. Senior pet care often requires that you find ways for your pet to get more exercise even when they don't want to do it. You might try to take them on short walks more frequently or play time that can engage them as they lie down. This can help keep them from gaining too much weight. Senior pets often get overweight or obese during these years because they get less active. As you engage in pet care, look for ways that your pet can get a little more exercise without making them uncomfortable.
