TPLO Surgery

The cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) inside a dog's knee has the same responsibilities as a human's anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Rupturing of the ligament is a common injury for canines, and Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) surgery is the standard medical procedure to repair the joint. Our veterinarians at Fort Hunt Animal Hospital in Alexandria can assist in reducing your pet's chronic pain and addressing your concerns about the pending surgery.

How to Diagnose a CCL Tear

A veterinarian will perform a thorough orthopedic examination of the injured joint, looking for swelling and gauging the leg's inflammation level. Usually, your pet will be sedated to eliminate any tension in its muscles during the exam. A veterinarian near you may request x-rays to confirm the CCL tear.

What is TPLO Surgery?

Unlike a human's ACL, a rupture of the CCL rarely occurs in healthy dogs. Often, the injury happens to older canines who tear the ligament after a misstep during their daily activities. A ruptured CCL prevents your pet from walking without a noticeable limp. A vet near you will repair the injury with TPLO surgery, entering through the top of the tibia to rotate the bone and stabilize the knee joint with a plate and screws. After an extensive rehabilitation program, your dog should return to its active lifestyle.

Aftercare Program Following TPLO Surgery

The aftercare program following TPLO surgery is key to the well-being of your furry friend. The required rehabilitation associated with this pet surgery will last for three months. Your dog will be restricted from movement for the first few weeks after being released from medical pet care. It is best to keep them in a pen, which limits their activity.

The leg's soft tissue and tibia need time to heal, and the lack of movement removes the threat of infection from developing. A veterinarian will schedule a follow-up exam approximately six weeks after TPLO surgery to inspect the joint and may recommend a limited exercise program for your pet, which could consist of walking your dog on a leash.
