Your pet is part of your family. And just like a human being in your family, he or she requires routine medical care to stay healthy. At Fort Hunt Animal Hospital, serving Alexandria and the surrounding VA area, a veterinarian from our facility will provide your pet with a wellness examination that helps us identify any health problems your pet has, among other benefits.
A veterinary exam consists of a practitioner evaluating various parts of your pet including his or her skin, eyes, ears and inside of his or her mouth. We evaluate your pet's weight to ensure your pet is at a healthy weight for his or her breed and age. We look for parasitic outbreaks, infections, cataracts, and gum disease and heart murmurs. We'll make sure your pet doesn't have any issues with his or her gait. We do a thorough examination of your pet's joints to look for signs of inflammation that could indicate arthritis. Generally, younger pets under the age of seven years should have a yearly exam while older pets, those who are seven years or older, should come in every six months for an exam.
Our vet may order tests such as a complete blood cell count, urinalysis, heartworm check, chemistry panel or fecal exam. We screen to ensure your pet doesn't have a vitamin or mineral deficiency and doesn't have any signs of internal issues. We'll check your pet's vital signs including his or her blood pressure, heart rate, and respiration. Based on the findings of our testing and physical examination, our veterinarian may prescribe a medication or recommend lifestyle changes for your pet.
At your pet's routine examination, it's a prime time to make sure your pet is up to date on his or her vaccines. It's also the ideal time to discuss any questions or concerns you have regarding your pet's health or behavior. Keep in mind, a behavioral problem could indicate an issue with your pet's health.
A regular veterinary exam extends the life of your pet by catching problems early and treating them in a timely manner. Early detection has the best prognosis. Vet exams provide preventative measures that could ward off problems in the future. Routine exams have the potential to save you money in the long run because they could prevent serious problems from occurring. Routine exams improve the quality of your pet's life.

I have been using Ft. Hunt Animal Hospital for about 30 years and have always found the doctors and staff to be very caring. I appreciate the time spent explaining specific findings and answering questions. I never feel rushed.
