Ignore a problem and make it worse. When you sweep an issue under the rug the issue grows and multiplies until it becomes uncontrollable. If only you’d taken care of it sooner. Such is life. If we take time to go the dentist, or our physician for routine exams we can find a problem in its early stages and treat it at a lower cost with greater ease. The same is true with pets in Alexandria. A routine Pet Wellness exam is recommended to help your pet have a long healthy life.
The age of your pet will determine how often they need to be seen. It is recommended that a veterinarian do a Pet Wellness exam once a year, or twice a year if your pet is over nine years of age.
Your pet’s wellness exam will be much like the one you go to. Most of the time the appointment will start with a veterinary tech taking your pet’s vitals. Weight is generally recorded first; after that, the tech will take your pet’s temperature, pulse, and respiration. The veterinarian will then come into the room and do a head to toe exam. The vet will check your pet’s eyes, ears, mouth, lymph nodes, heart, lungs, and skeletal system. The process will vary for every pet and the veterinarian may spend time on one area more than another. An older pet may require a visit that is more focused on vision, or the skeletal system as both are things pets struggle within the senior years.
After the examination is over the vet will make recommendations for your pet. The veterinarian might recommend things such as vaccinations, or flea& tick prevention. Vaccinations may be given in a clinic or at a “shot clinic”, but that is entirely up to you. Testing for heartworms might also be discussed.
When you leave your Alexandria vet’s office your pet will be better off both in the short and the long-term. Contact us today at 703-360-6100 to schedule an appointment.

I have been using Ft. Hunt Animal Hospital for about 30 years and have always found the doctors and staff to be very caring. I appreciate the time spent explaining specific findings and answering questions. I never feel rushed.
