How Often Should I have Pet Groomed?

The proper grooming schedule for your pet will vary depending on the breed, the length and thickness of the coat and the activity level. The season may also factor into your grooming timeline, for instance, some pet owners bring this pet in for grooming more often in summer. With professional grooming available in the same building as your Alexandria vet, we hope to make your vet and grooming visits more convenient, no matter how often your pet needs a trim. Here are some general pet grooming guidelines to help ensure your pet always looks and feels his or her very best.

Pet Grooming

Your Pet’s Ideal Grooming Schedule

Grooming frequency considerations:

  • Many groomers recommend a schedule of every 6 to 8 weeks to keep your pets fur, skin, and nails in top condition.
  • Lhasa Apso and Shih-Tzu dogs may need grooming every 6 weeks.
  • Poodles with a standard cut may do well with grooming visits every 8 weeks.
  • For dogs with a heavy coat, such as sheepdogs, consider alternating a thorough grooming session with a trim, every other month. You may want to request a short summer cut to get your pet comfortably through the Alexandria summer months.
  • If you do a lot of between-grooming-visit upkeep at home (brushing your pet’s coat and cutting his nails regularly), you may be able to extend the time between grooming appointments.
  • Longer-haired dogs need more frequent grooming in order to maintain a neat look and remain free of tangles or matted fur.
  • If your favorite cut involves a specific overall shape, you may need more frequent groomer visits to maintain it.
  • The standard puppy cut (also called a kennel cut) is quite low maintenance. Your dog's fur is trimmed to about 2” or less, per your instructions, all over.
  • Start early in life with grooming appointments for your puppy. This helps him or her get comfortable with the experience of being groomed so that they will learn to enjoy being pampered.
