Core Canine Vaccinations Administered by Our Alexandria Veterinarian

dog vaccination

Your dog is your best friend, and best friends deserve the best care, commitment and love you can possibly give them. Truly caring for your dog means making sure he or she gets regularly vaccinated by our veterinarian here in Alexandria.

The Vaccine Truth

There is discussion amongst pet owners and some veterinarians about whether vaccines are necessary. Our vet says unequivocally yes!  If your dog is not vaccinated it’s like throwing him into the lion’s den and hoping for the best. Every vaccine serves its purpose in keeping dogs protected from  dangerous and deadly diseases.

Vaccine Types

Vaccines are classified as core or non-core depending on the seriousness of the disease and the things your dog may be exposed to.

Core Vaccinations

Our Alexandria vet administers the following, non-negotiable vaccines to our dog patients:

  • Rabies Vaccine: Required by law and protects dogs from an agonizing death.
  • Parvovirus Vaccine: Parvo has an 80 percent mortality rate and is especially dangerous for puppies.
  • Distemper Vaccine: Distemper, often fatal, spreads quickly where dogs gather.
  • Leptospirosis or Canine Hepatitis Vaccine: Spread by drinking water contaminated with the urine of infected animals and affects the kidneys.

Non-Core Vaccines

At the yearly wellness exam, our veterinarian will discuss your lifestyle to recommend which non-core vaccine will protect your dog. These include:

  • Lyme Disease Vaccine: If you hike or spend time with your dog outdoors.
  • Bordetella or Kennel Cough Vaccine: Prevents kennel cough and required by most boarding facilities.
  • Parainfluenza or Canine Flu Vaccine: For dogs who spend time with other dogs.
  • Adenovirus Vaccine: For dogs who may have contact with the feces of an infected dog.

Our Alexandria veterinarian is dedicated to the safety, health and happiness of all our pet patients, which means administering the right vaccine at the right time.

I have been using Ft. Hunt Animal Hospital for about 30 years and have always found the doctors and staff to be very caring. I appreciate the time spent explaining specific findings and answering questions. I never feel rushed.
