Pet Dental

Did you know that the condition of your pet's teeth can affect its general health? At Fort Hunt Animal Hospital, we want pet parents to know how important pet dentistry is to a dog or cat's health and lifespan. Health problems such as heart disease or liver problems can cause or be caused by poor dental health in pets, which is why we recommend bringing your dog or cat in for a pet dental examination at least once a year.

Veterinarian Explains Pet Dental Problem Signs

Our veterinarian will examine your pet's teeth, tongue, and gums yearly during its pet wellness exam. If cleaning or other dental care is needed, we'll provide exceptional, thorough care to prevent other health problems from happening. But sometimes dental troubles pop up in between visits to our office. Call us at 703-360-6100 for an appointment if you see any of these symptoms:

  • Broken or loose teeth
  • Teeth that are brown or covered in tartar
  • Refusing to eat or a reduced appetite
  • Drooling, dropping food from the mouth or whining while eating
  • Swelling or bleeding around the mouth
  • Extremely bad breath

Pet Dental Troubles

Dogs and cats get significantly fewer cavities than humans due, probably because they rarely eat sweets or sticky foods, but other dental problems can bother them on a regular basis. Some of the most common are periodontal disease, broken teeth and roots, abscesses or infected gums, misaligned jaw or bite and tumors in the mouth.

The most common dental condition among pets is periodontal disease. By the time they're three years old, most pets have signs of this. Like humans, plaque in the mouth builds up to create tough tartar, which can harbor diseases that often spread to the rest of the body. Poor dental hygiene in dogs and cats often result in kidney, liver and heart disease. The cure for periodontal disease is a thorough tooth cleaning, which our vet will do in our office.

We use anesthesia during dental procedures to help us to avoid stress and pain for your pet. It's safer for your pet to get its teeth cleaned under anesthesia because it won't be moving around, endangering itself from sharp instruments. In addition, an awake and lively pet is unlikely to sit still long enough for us to get a usable dental x-ray, which is an important tool for dental procedures.

With regular visits to our Alexandria office, your pet should enjoy good dental health throughout its life. If we haven't seen your pet lately, or if you're looking for a new Alexandria vet, call our office at 703-360-6100 to make an appointment.

Testimonial

I have been using Ft. Hunt Animal Hospital for about 30 years and have always found the doctors and staff to be very caring. I appreciate the time spent explaining specific findings and answering questions. I never feel rushed.
